Tie them ropes, kick those tyres, gas up and go!.Firstly I'd like to thank all those people who rang and offered help in someway regarding the 2000 meet. We really appreciate it very much. Over the recent months we've been getting a number of inquiries on racecar construction, safety and classes. Let's address the classification issue first, members need to read the SCTA rulebook, page 7, Section I2. This will answer all your questions. Car safety and construction is a lot harder to comment on especially without seeing the quality of work that has been carried out on each individual car. So because of the considerable increase in numbers of new race cars and entrants, it's been decided to have a pre-race construction check. This will be a basic check on work carried out . I hope all new cars, bikes etc can attend as if it doesn't conform to the rulebook at the salt, it doesn't run. So if you don't want to undertake a major rebuild on the salt, it's in your best interests to get it checked so you can rectify any problems with safety or construction issues. Please ring me on 03 9786 1830 to confirm your intention to ahving your vehicle checked. Please note, it doesn't need to be finished to be checked. This is just a basic check on work that's been done to date. (Don’t forget to bring any drivers helmet, suits etc to be cleared) Now that you've read this, ring me, and "get it checked first" Back to work you go! Wayne O'Grady - Chief Steward --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Race Dates For 2000 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The course will be open for racing on Monday the 6th of March 2000 until Friday the 10th of March 2000. NOTE: we will need some helpers for setup on the 4th and 5th. Track Conditions The weather has been very favorable and the track surface is now dry. With the recent strong Northerly blowing, all goes well. Regards Chris Baxter --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rod's Ramblings --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a copy of the press release that Rod has been sending out. The Americans are coming! Once again the Salt Flats of Lake Gairdner, South Australia will vibrate to the sounds of the combustion engine, when the Dry Lakes Racers of Australia hold their annual speed week commencing on 6th March 2000. At the time of writing, three overseas entries have been received. Chuck Salmen with his beautiful '34 Ford Roadster and the World Record Holding motorbike of Dennis Manning who has run over 300 mph. Casey Hill from New Zealand will also be running his Roadster and his motorbike. Spectators will be able to seethe Pontiac of Australia's Leigh Fielder who smashed his class record by over 20mph on the Aussie Assalt tour of Bonneville's 50th Anniversary in 1998. Also running will be the KB powered belly tank of John Lynch and the blown Rodent powered Studebaker of Rod Hadfield, who is now building a brand new Commodore as the Studebaker has been sold to Queensland Drag Racer John Dawson. Dry Lake Racing is the ideal use for your drag race vehicle during this lack of venues. Leigh Fielder's Pontiac is a former Pro-Stock car and a large majority of the 500 cars at the Bonneville 50th were converted from drag racing, rails, altereds and gassers. With it's ideal atmospheric conditions, Lake Gairdner is the fastest Land Speed course in the world and is a sight that truly takes your breath away with it's scenery alone. The sights and sounds are something that really must be witnessed, every class of vehicle is catered for using the Southern California Timing Associations rules and the DLRA have purchased their original timing equipment so any records created here can be official World Records. Other interesting combinations entered this year include a V8 powered bike built by well known Australian Lucky Keiser and a two engined streamliner of Victorian Veteran Racers Alan Murchison. If you would like to enter or be a spectator or for any general enquiries contact Rod Hadfield on 03 5472 4629 AH or Wayne O'Grady on 03 9786 1830.
