The things that have changed are: • Side by side tracks this year # 1 & # 2. • Improved track markers and return road markers, so no crossing over on return roads. • More shade in scrutineering and meeting area thanks to Clare Bros team. • We have more mats to get past the wet area onto the Lake (hopefully). • New timing equipment for track #2. • Now all competitors will have a print out to take home. Thanks to Paul Lynch working with several people on this. • Speed limits are: 150 mph for cars and 175 mph for bikes on track #2. • More two way radios for Starters, Timers, Race Director, SES crews and Firies, this for our DLRA channels only You cannot have too much communication at a Race Meet. • James Stewart (commonly called Doctor Goggles) will be manning our new FM channel so you may get him in your car. • New air bag to jack vehicles stuck in mud and hope it never gets used. • Greg Wapling and Carol have been working tirelessly on our permit for the Lake, as we now need to have emergency procedures, muster points, a fence around the dumpit from the toilet waste for the Health Dept., A big job to liaise with DEW, Co -management Board and GRAC but it is slowly happening (paperwork and Safety Procedures etc.,) • Greg is s updating the Web Page with a lot more information and it's looking good! • Rob Caroll and Greg Telford have been working on the track layout and Procedures so that those who volunteer for the first time understand what they need to do. They were part of the Working Bee held at the Lake between Christmas and New Year. I believe 10 or so people took part checking the Camp, Generator, Toilet, around the camp in general. They located the tap for the Bore after 10 years, then checked the Salt and relocated the new track layout with GPS settings for the Surveyors • We need to remove the old cars from the DLRA Camp so if people involved could check with Gary Brennan, he is co-ordinating this. • Trevor Beck has requested wire for the Generator so if you can help , please call him. • The last 12 months has been very busy for the Committee. There has been a meeting at Castlemaine every month, some with phone hook ups with Committee Members from QLD, NSW and SA involved . I would like to thank everybody on the Committee for their help to move the club forward and the phone calls from Members with helpful suggestions. It all makes the Club bigger and better. - I would also like to thank the people who have helped with sponsorship for our 25th Anniversary event along with sponsorship in the Newsletter and Rule Book. This is that time of year when we are all watching the weather in that part of SA. There will be a lake inspection carried out on the 12th of March by Michael Brixton, Tony Cooke, Peter Noy and Steve Vorwerk, they will post their findings on the forum on the 13th or 14th of March - Keep looking !! See you on the Great White Lake (Dyno). Ps If anyone is taking a tilt tray to the Lake, would you please call me on 0417 489 149 Regards, Norman Bradshaw ============================================================================================================= Speed Week Race Dates ============================================================================================================= SPEEDWEEK 2015 … Dates are Monday the 23rd of March til Friday the 27th of March !!! ============================================================================================================= As you may be aware ============================================================================================================= This year it looked like we had no one to operate the canteen which meant we would have to bring and cook our own meals. Something we’re not used to and weren’t looking forward to. Luckily Mildura Ice, who normally look after the ice requirements for Speedweek, have stepped up to the plate, enlisting more helpers to help to run the canteen throughout Speedweek. This news is a great relief to all race teams and spectators that are lousy cooks. ============================================================================================================= NEXT MEETING ============================================================================================================= Our next meeting is the AGM and is being held at SpeedWeek Date: Sunday 22nd March 2015 - 5.30pm Location: Lake Gairdner, South Australia ============================================================================================================= Norm's Shit - Norm Hardinge ============================================================================================================= DLRA’s Speedweek 25 at Lake Gairdner South Australia is only weeks away and if you would like to see Australia’s fastest cars in action, meet the race teams behind them and be part of this monumental occasion, this is your chance. Racing starts on the 23rd and goes until the 27th of March 2015. The entries have been keeping Carol Hadfield busy. So far there are 176 pre entries from right across Australia. This year it looked like we had no one to operate the canteen which meant we would have to bring and cook our own meals. Track conditions last year were crap. Five normally stable cars went into a spin one after the other at the 2 ½ mile mark. Neil Davies driving the Big Knob roadster was one of them. Neil went into a spin at 200+ mph causing salt to blast into places it has never been and although we washed off the salt at the end of racing last year, we have had corrosion issues like never before. Only half of the magnesium gear box extension housing still exists and the starter motor is now a solid mass of rust. We decided to totally strip the roadster and rebuild it, coating all parts in POR 15 or epoxy paint as we reassembled it. Mat Lagoon from Engine Action in Echuca pulled down the big block Ford motor for inspection. He found a small crack in one of the pistons. A new set of custom made pistons from the US was the solution - better to find the problem in Mat’s workshop than at 200mph on the salt! The motor is back in the car now and ready to chase some records. Work is starting on the front and rear ends, the front axle was bent and all suspension bushes were flogged out. A quick call to Rod Tech fixed that. We are yet to start on the rear end. The brake rotors, hats and callipers look like crap but luckily we have some spares hidden away. Optimally we run 60% rear bias with weight by adding lead where needed. But over the last few years, we’ve added and altered existing locations for various parts without checking the weight bias. Recent investigations have shown that we need about 100kgs in front of the rear axle to return back to our preferred 60% rear bias. Getting it right means we should be able to avoid another spin. DLRA have invested a lot of money in timing equipment so that this year an official record can be ran on either the long track or the short track. Last year the short course was timed using GPS so that drivers could do shake down runs without holding up the serious record attempts. The short course is going to be good for all records up to 175 mph which will clear up the long track and allow those going greater than 175 mph more runs. This year we have people from Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales joining the Big Knob crew. Big Knob Racing already holds two records at over 200 mph. We hope this year to grab another two records in new classes with Neil Davies and Mat Lagoon at the wheel and I hope to bump my record up a bit further. See you at the salt Norm Hardinge ============================================================================================================= VOLUNTEERS ============================================================================================================= We could not run Speed Week without our fantastic volunteers. Many of our volunteers have been doing the same jobs year after year because they want to support Land Speed Racing and love being so close to the action in a very unique location. There are over 650 different jobs to make Speed Week the success it is. Each job is only a half day duration and while many jobs require technical experience and knowledge there are many tasks that will be exciting and rewarding to the novice. So there is something for everyone. There are descriptions for each task so you can figure out for yourself if it's something that you would feel comfortable doing. You will be given instructions by the Event Coordinator prior to undertaking any task. All entrants or a team member must volunteer for at least one task during Speed Week, after all it is their event. Want to help the DLRA and volunteer for a job? Just go towww.dlra.org.au/schedule.html, pick a day and fill in your details and submit. It's as simple as that. Our online booking system is up and running Canteen - Tom Noack is still in contact with the Gawler Rotary and Apex Clubs and will let me know as soon as he has anything from them. Another party has tried several times to talk to Joy about the catering but has been unsuccessful and has now withdrawn. There had also been interest from a company called Ripper Roasts out of Melbourne but they have since declined. T Shirt sponsorship, we have 3 sponsors at $2,000.00 each – Mastec, Barnes Towing and Shed Market from Coffs Harbour. Payment has been received from Barnes Towing and Shed Market, Mastec are to pay in February. Correspondence In: Penrite Oils have sent us a mesh banner showing partnership between Penrite and DLRA, they have promised Hi Vis Vests and core flute signs. A letter and brochure from Big 4 Holiday Park, Port Augusta offering racers and spectators of DLRA Speedweek 15% discount, only applies to phone bookings and need to mention Lake Gairdner Salt Lakers. Correspondence Out: Application to DEW for use of Lake Gairdner for 2015 Speedweek and to drive on the lake at the Working Bee between Christmas and New Year. Letter to Regional Commander, CFS Port Lincoln requesting assistance with a Fire and Rescue team plus hire of an appliance. Letter to Penrite thanking them for their banner, offer of Hi-vis vests and core flute signs and requesting that the core flute signs be delivered to Harcourt Service Station with their Penrite oil order. Financial Report: • General Account $40,827.83 • Loans & Donations Account $20,161.91 • Petty Cash $ 546.30 I have processed 85 entries so far and have another 23 on my desk to process, quite a few of these are incomplete so am waiting for completion. I have had some entrants put money in the bank and not sent forms in as yet and have had a $50.00 deposit with no name or reference to who it is. I don’t have a detailed financial report at this stage as my time has been consumed with processing and receipting entries and annual subs payments along with constant phone enquiries. There are also changes being made to the entries into MYOB which won’t be finalised until the 6th of February. Moved that the report be accepted by Carol Hadfield, Seconded by: Gary Brennan Reports: Committee Meeting Minutes from 12th January 2015. These were read out at the meeting. Short break for Lunch General Business: Canteen – Ripper Roasts have now got back to us and will not be proceeding. Dion Higgins of Mildura Ice who currently supplies our ice for Speed Week has responded to the expression of interest for catering services for Speed Weed. He has already spoken to Joy and Len and has previously worked at Mt. Ive and in the canteen during Speed Week so is well aware of what is required. He also has transported many of Joy supplies from Broken Hill for the last couple of years. He will be contacting us later this week after speaking to Joy and Len again to confirm the offer. This is great news. The idea of running Two events a year at Lake Gairdner was raised at the last Committee Meeting. Many members at the meeting were of the same opinion that Lake Omeo would only be suitable around the same time that we are at Lake Gairdner and would probably not be used unless we got a cancellation at Lake Gairdner and Lake Omeo was dry. Club loans – If we have the successful year that we hope to have the plan is to repay all outstanding loans after the 2015 event. The meeting was then opened to the floor and members given the opportunity to ask questions Greg Butler – Ask about the cost of the wastewater treatment plant that we bought. It was around $10,000 and was built to a spec. as required for South Australian regulations. As such we may require 2 customers to purchase all the equipment. Gary Brennan - suggested that we contact Tony Cook to see if he is interested in doing some shifts as Timer Track 2. Tony has had previous experience with the new timing system and would be very useful as we currently do not have a second timer. Gary Brennan – Asked about the $10 weekly diesel levy that campers at the DLRA camp have to pay and that it was probably time to increase this to $15. This was agreed by committee to be a good idea and considering that we now have the second generator installed and operating the time was right to increase this levy. Rod Hadfield – on behalf of the members and committee would like to thank those people who went out the Lake Gairdner for the Working Bee and for the terrific job they did. There was a hearty round of applause in response to this. Meeting closed 2.30pm ============================================================================================================= Minutes of Committee Meeting 9th February, 2015 ============================================================================================================= Meeting opened: 8:00pm In Attendance: Norm Bradshaw, Greg Wapling, Rob Carroll, Greg Telford, Steve Charlton, Carol & Rod Hadfield, Graham Hadley, Lionel West Conference Phone: Bob Ellis, Paul Lynch, Stephen Bridge Apologies: Gary Satara, Chris Hanlon, Peter Leikvold Minutes from Previous Committee Meeting: Moved: Steven Charlton Seconded: Lionel West Action Items from last Committee Meeting: 1. Wastewater –Greg has also had discussions with Craig Martin from Health department and the engineer and emailed all committee members. Action: Waiting for report from Rich Gayler. 2. Sponsorship package: Greg has put together a Sponsorship Proposal document which is to be updated. Bob wants to organise some best presented trophies for car, bike and crew. He has sponsors in mind. Unanimous approval for this initiative. Action: Carol & Greg to make a list of sponsors to canvass advertisers for the rule book and to get artwork Action: Greg to send latest version to Bob 3. Merchandise: Event T Shirts, Stickers, Posters and Tin signs have been ordered. Carol put forward the idea that foundation members who attend Speed Week are given Tin Sign (probably at the AGM or Auction) 4. Timing Equipment: Greg has had the faulty chronograph repaired by Event Timing. Greg contacted Trevor Beck about price of batteries. When Trev enquired with his supplier he was given a box of 144 batteries. Rob Cranfield is unlikely to be the Track 2 starter for 2015, so this position is vacant. Tony Cooke has offered to help out with training volunteers but doesn’t want to be in the caravan all week. Paul Lynch spoke about the possible lengthing of track 2 if conditions are suitable and proposed 3 possible outcomes; Plan A – timing over the 1 mile, Plan B – timing over 400mm and Plan C- timing over 132ft. He will be updating the timing procedures accordingly. Noted that the short course record is set between the 2 and 2 ¼ . Bob thinks we won’t need the full 4 miles. Action: Paul to arrange for transport of timing equipment back to Melbourne. Action: Greg Wapling to pick up timing equipment and deliver to Hadfield’s. 5. Trybooking: we received 49 entries through the online system along with 28 renewals, 19 T-shirt sales, 26 camping fees and 61 access fees totalling $22,538.03. 6. Purchase of Bullbag. Action: Norm to purchase. 7. Rookie booklet Action: Paul to update 8. Permits for Club Vehicles: Rob and Greg to record vehicle details at working bee, these were sent to David Pluckhahn and he has handed this information to the Kimba Police. Action: Greg to send list to Carol again 9. Surveyors: We need to contact our surveyors to confirm that they will be there on the Thursday again and that we have a new track layout Action: Norm to contact Surveyors Action: Greg to send email with dates (19/03/2015), track layout and instructions that their contacts are Bob Ellis and Greg Telford. Time for them to be at Lake Gairdner is 10am 10. Grading of road: Joy Newton asked us to contact Transport SA about getting the road graded prior to Speed Week. Report from working bee is that the road is in good condition and was graded before Christmas. Action: Carol has asked Joy for the contact details of the authorities to contact but hasn’t received anything from her as yet. Action: Norm to try and get the contact details from Doc. 11. Kim Krebs has offered help with negotiations with Gawler Ranges Co-Management board and DEW. If Kim was comfortable with it, the committee felt that she would be ideally placed to become involved with DEW liaison and Co-Management Board and GRAC liaison. Action: Norm to give Kim a call. 12. Penrite: Were going to deliver Core flute signs to Harcourt Service Station. Carol actually met the Penrite rep whilst in Castlemaine and he has promised to arrange delivery. 13. Canteen – Dion Higgins has been updating Carol and has put his intentions on the forum. He has confirmed that he will be providing meals from Saturday to Friday. We need to make sure that we support him. 14. Running of two events a year at Lake Gairdner: This was discussed again and the general consensus is that the logistics of event location and the cost of getting there is too great to sustain 2 meetings a year. We would be more likely having half of normal numbers attending each event than a doubling of numbers. And the cost for each event would be thesame. 15. Increasing fuel levy to campers as suggested by Garry Brennan at the General Meeting. Action: Carol to talk to Gary about the cost structure we currently have in place. Correspondence In: 1. Emails from John Dyer member # 1221 requesting to use #59 on his bike as it is a special number to him. He will be advised to bring a set of his numbers just in case #59 turns up at the event and refuses him to use his numbers Correspondence Out:. 1. Letter to Bill Marshall member #59 (inactive) on the 23rd of January requesting permission for John Dwyer to use his number, I stated if I didn’t hear from him within 3 weeks I will assume it is ok for the number to be used. As yet I haven’theard from him. 2. Email to Jarrod Harding from Penrite requesting that they deliver the core flute signs to Harcourt Service Station with their next oil delivery. 3. Greg - Emails and Letter to David Grosse – DEW regarding Introduction of new Commercial Management Zone at Lake Gairdner and other matters. Financial Report: as at 3rd February 2015 • General Account: $ 77,845.71 • Loans & Donations Account: $ 20,161.91 • Petty Cash $ 364.10 Carol requested another $500 for petty cash Moved Steve Seconded Bob Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss reports – see attached Moved: Carol Hadfield Seconded: Steve Charlton As had been minuted in many previous meetings that we would pay Carol once we were in a better financial position. Norm moved that now that we are in a much better financial position that we finally pay Carol her entitlement that was due in July 2014. Unanimously approved. General Business: 1. Greg has purchased an FM transmitter and microphones for the club to be used by Dr. Goggles in his job as announcer at Speed Week. 2. AGM: As prescribed in the DLRA Constitution the date, time and location of the AGM will be advertised in Newsletter and on Website along with an Agenda for the AGM. 3. NSW Meeting: to be held next Sunday. Gary informs that at this stage there are no inspections booked for this meeting. 4. Peter Leikvold has informed the club that he now has a new job and will be unable to attend Speed Week and perform his usual role on the start line. But he and David have already organised a replacement for him. We wish Peter all the best in his new job. 5. Colin Clare has let us know that they will not be arriving until Friday afternoon. So the shade structures that they will be bringing and erecting will not be up when scrutineering starts on Friday. But they have promised they will get them up as soon as they can when the do arrive. Probably not valid in many respects. Minutes of NSW Meeting 22th February 2015 • Constitution on the website is not current- (this has now been rectified- Gary). • Start Line, Track condition, return roads, markers and flags, shade shelters- concerns. • Lack of runs per entrant • Timing on the GPS course • Lack of communications both in hardware and people • Safety update and Rule changes • AGM to be held Sunday night from now on. • Lack of organization for volunteers • Driving and riding of competition vehicles in the pits • All of the above issues were discussed by the NSW members and all felt they were the same issues that they felt should be brought to the attention of the DLRA Committee at the next general meeting in Melbourne on 19th May 2013. • Mark Dunn put the motion to increase active member fees to $50. Seconded by Peter Bartetzko. Agreed unanimously. • Paul Marcos put motion that all drivers pay the same entry fee. Seconded by Mark Dunn. Majority agreed. • It was discussed that no refunds should be payable except for official cancellation and then only a certain percentage so we can cover costs. • No refund for no shows but put entry on a buy back scheme for purchase by late entrants plus charge the late entry fee as in Bonneville. • Discussion that the AGM on the lake was a farce and that the positions that were filled were unconstitutional. • Request Melbourne Committee to set dates for meetings 12 months in advance as minuted at a number of meetings. That way State Delegates can advertise with more notice and get more involvement from members. • A suggestion that all new race vehicles MUST attend a local State meeting scrutineering day or at least be looked at by a scrutineer before the event on the lake otherwise they go to the end of the line during race week. New vehicles take up too much valuable time in the scrutineering tent if they have not been looked at prior • A letter was tabled from Al Fountain and detailed: o Why Trevor Slaughter was able to forgo his 125 and 150 license pass and do a 177 first, 200 second and 250 third pass, shred a tyre and have no consequences. o Why the new timing equipment did not print timing slips and give more than one speed as it was supposed to do. o The behavior of the Race Director as well as his language was unacceptable. o Fire crews chase down each vehicle after a run which wastes time. We should be able to use procedures from Bonneville and still remain safe. o Start times should be 7am sharp. Currently it is too haphazard. o Every competition vehicle should have a support vehicle. If there is not one available then you should go to the end of the line. o The AGM was a sham. o Al ran 19 runs in 3 days at Bonneville. At Lake Gairdner he got 5 runs in 4 days which he considered pathetic. • At the meeting Al Fountain, Dave McLachlan and Mark Dunn said they would consider just running at Bonneville as it was better organized, easier to do and cheaper if they left the vehicle in the US. • There was a general consensus that the availability of timing on the GPS track would alleviate a lot of stress on the main track for under 175MPH runs. • All members were in favour of State Delegates managing their own state members database by putting the database, or part of it on the cloud or some other method. This would enable better communications both intrastate and for the Secretary/Treasurer for memberships and newsletters. • It was decided that there needed to be more communication between State Delegates. Gary was to contact them and arrange a conference call so issues could be formulated and sent to the DLRA Committee so they could be placed on the agenda for discussion at the next meeting on the 19th May 2013. • Efforts were still underway to enable better communications on the lake by using wireless technology and having timing and general race information available in the pits/start line/canteen areas. Correspondence In • Nil. Correspondence Out • Nil Financial Report • n/a General Business • The results of the last DLRA Committee meeting in Melbourne dated 9th February 2015 were discussed in detail. • Steve Muller had a suggestion that the website should have a page set aside as the DLRA ‘Wishlist’ of items the DLRA needs. From tyres for caravans to electrical or plumbing equipment for the camp etc to network the members to supply what the club needs at low or no cost. Greg Wapling will be advised by Gary. • Future NSW meeting dates will be set down for one week before the Melbourne general meeting dates on a Saturday and advised to the members by email/facebook/forum well in advance. • Discussion on the new timing equipment, especially on the old GPS track, now called Track 2 was well received. There will be two sets of lights which will give the opportunity run a record on that track. It is yet to be determined whether it will be from 1 3/4 to 2 mile or from 1/ ¾ to 2 ¾ mile depending on track conditions. • Gary talked about the plans for future wireless data, voice and video that was being undertaken by Paul Lynch in order to network the starters, admin van in the pits and the timer van to display information on a reader board or plasma display in the pits. This was well received by the members who felt this would involve the spectators more in the atmosphere of the event. Gary thanked everyone for their attendance and reminded members that their subscriptions were due either now if they were inactive or on the 1st January 2016 for next year.
