Track Grooming
1. Description
The surface of the salt on the lake varies from year to year depending upon the previous seasons. Sometimes it is very flat almost like a carpet, other years it will be covered in pressure ridges, one year we even had these hard mounds covering the lake. Land Speed vehicles need as smooth a surface as possible so it is groomed or flattened along the entire lenght of track 1 and 2, the pits and if necessary the return roads.
We use a tractor pulling a large I beam to "flatten" the surface and remove the ridges and valleys.
2. Responsability
It is the responsability of the Race Director to direct the tractor driver as to what areas are to be done. Depending upon when the tractor can start work it will be track 1 that gets 1 pass first, then track 2 and then the pits. Depending upon the surface it may take several passes to provide the best surface. It is the Race Director's responsability to determine when the surface is ready.
The tractor driver will conduct a mechanical and safety check of the tractor prior to its use each day.
