Sun Smart

The DLRA Speed Week is conducted at Lake Gairdner in the outback of the state of South Australia during the middle of summer. At this time of the year, it is one of the hotest places on earth. Entrants and spectators to Speed Week need to be well prepared and need to monitor their physical well-being each day they are exposed to these conditions.

You will be spending long hours out on the lake and the surface is very reflective so you need to apply sunscreen where you have never applied it before.

Make sure you bring and wear;

  • sun protective clothing (long-sleeved shirts with collar and trousers/knee-length shorts)
  • sun protective hats that cover the face, head, ears and neck
  • sunglasses that meet Australian standards
  • broad spectrum, SPF 30+, water resistant sunscreen

Also bring your own shade structure, beach umbrellas don't work, the best are the portable folding canopies. Bring guy ropes and tech screws (and a drill) to keep them secure as it can get windy.

Try an minimise your time out in the direct sun.
