Shade Shelter

1. Description

There are a number of shade shelters provided by the DLRA to protect officials and entrants.
There are shelters for technical inspection, merchandise, start lines. There is a standardized construction for these shelters which we have found to work best on the salt.

2. Responsibility

Erect and dismantle shade shelters.

 

3. Duties

Errection of Shade Shelter

  1. Lay the lateral poles (3.6m) out in the shape of the shelter.
  2. Put a spider and foot at each corner.
  3. And then join them up.
  4. Put a upright pole (2.4m) at each corner and put the foot on.
  5. Then lift the roof and insert the upright poles for one side and then repeat on the other side
  6. Fit springs and ropes to each corner and tie down including triangulated bracing
  7. Move the frame into its fianl position and then screw the feet down to the salt.
  8. Pull tarp over frame and use bungies to secure tarp to frame

 

3.1 Volunteer Instructions

On the day of your duty, you report direct to the area where you are errecting or dismantle shelters.

Make sure you sign the Volunteers Book next to your name.

The morning session is from 8.00am to about 12.00 noon.

The afternoon session starts at about 1.00pm till 5.00pm or close of business on that day.

You must be ready to start your shift at these times.

Make sure you have a hat, sunglasses, sun cream, snacks. Water is provided from the esky at the pre-stage and there are portable toilets through out the pits.

4. Tasks

4.1 Set up

  1. Car Technical Inspection - there are 3 bays to be erected (joined on the long sides), located in the middle of the pits
  2. Motorcycle Technical Inspection - there are 2 bays to be erected (joined on the long sides), located in theside of the pits
  3. Merchandise - there are 4 bays to be erected (joined in a square), located opposite the registration van
  4. Start Line 1- there is 4 bays to be erected (joined in a line on the long sides) and placed over the actual start line
  5. Start Line 2 - there is 2 bays to be errected (joined on the long sides) and place over the actual start line
  6. Timing Slips - there is 2 bays to be errected (joined on the long sides) between the race control bus and the registration van

  1. All poles get put into the poles trailer.
  2. All spiders, bases, springs and bases get put into the bin for that area.
  3. At the conclusion of Speed Week all equipment is to be collected, packed away and returned to the storage containers at the DLRA camp

Here's the shade shelter for Start Line 1 being erected, this is 24 metres long and 6 metres wide. This is the only one that gets the roof fitted first.
